All our Spec Miata race cars feature DKS Electronics programmable shift lights. Whether you are a Spec Miata Pro or a first time driver, you will know when to upshift and downshift thus keeping the engine revs within the torque range and the lap times down.
Our DKS sequential shift light is programmed as follows:
(1) 4800 (2) 6600 (3) 6800 (4) 7000 RPM
Light (1) goes out when the target (4800) RPM is reached. When you see the light, it means you are not in the torque band
Lights 2-4 work the opposite way. They go on once their respective target RPMs are reached (reverse of #1). Once you see light #4, shift. Otherwise, you will be bouncing off the rev limiter (7200 RPM) and wasting time and motor. The on-board tachometer may read higher than the actual RPM. Dave Wheeler @ Advanced Autosports (builder) told me that no two Miatas have a tachometer that reads the same. Thus, the factory tachometer is wrong. The computer that cuts off the engine at 7200+ RPM is right. Hence, on Frosty, the 7200 actual RPM comes in at a hair over 7500 on the tachometer. Since the shift light gets its' source from the diagnostics port, it is more accurate than the onboard tachometer.
